The first half yesterday will be remembered by those who witnessed it, as unquestionably the worst 45 minutes from Notts County since the departure of Steve Thompson.

Notts failed miserably to string two passes together, whilst Accrington ran rings around their lacklustre opponents with incredible ease.

No cigar: Weston came close twice for Notts...
Stanley did have the ball in the County's goal on the half hour, but to the relief of the travelling supporters, the effort was ruled offside.

The only other talking point was how on earth John Mullin remained on the pitch after a series of cynical fouls.

However, the quite inept Mr Pawson - who managed to infuriate both sets of supporters with a string of abysmal decisions - failed to produce a single card, despite repeated warnings.

The same cannot be said for Jay Smith and Paul Mayo, who both saw yellow for far less serious challenges.

Mr Pawson was poor throughout, and even managed to get both Accrington and Notts' followings to sing in unison: "You're not fit to referee" - a point that I find very hard to argue against.

Overall, the first-half from a Magpies' point of view was dreadful.

The second period saw a slight improvement, but it was still a far cry from the exciting football seen in the previous four league games.

With chances continuing to be very few and far between, it was Notts who came closest to breaking the deadlock through Myles Weston, who had a very poor game by his extremely high standards.

It was around the hour mark when the winger broke into the 18-yard box and beat the home goalkeeper with a well taken shot.

Unfortunately, to the dismay of Weston and the travelling support, the ball struck the far upright and was eventually scrambled clear.

Moments later, Weston could have netted again when Matt Hamshaw laid the ball across the face of goal, only for the ex-Charlton youth to completely miss

Master stroke: McParland replaced Facey with the goal-scorer, Sean Canham...
the ball with an open goal facing him from three-yards out.

Accrington nearly broke the deadlock shortly after, with a fiercely struck free-kick that Holt magnificently turned onto the bar.

With 15 minutes remaining, McParland finally brought on Sean Canham to replace Delroy Facey who had been totally ineffective throughout.

It seemed a master stroke by Charlie, as Canham put the Magpies in front with just three-minutes remaining.

A woeful back pass was seized upon by the substitute, and his coolness in beating Arthur was arguably the only highlight of a truly poor afternoon for the men in black and white.

The County faithful were jubilant, because even Notts could hang on to a lead for three minutes - so we were silly enough to think…

Accrington deservedly drew level after kamikaze defending once again allowed three points to become one, as Ryan gleefully smashed the ball past Holt, in the final minute.
