A number of previous attempts to find backers had failed, but he finally secured a deal with Quintain and a bid was put administrator Paul Finnity yesterday evening.

"If it is not us who are successful then I wish whoever takes over the best of luck - I really do," Scardino told the Evening Post.

"But for me it has been a victory to be able to put £3m of finance forward.

"We have put a very good offer and I believe our bid has everything required to take the club forward.

"We believe it will serve the best interests of the club, city and fans.

"But this is basically the end result of something we have been trying to do for almost three years now and for me there is a certain amount of personal satisfaction in that.

"We always said the money would be in place on Friday - we just didn't say which Friday.

"No matter what happens we have managed to find the finance to take this club forwards.

"Hopefully we will have the chance to do that and I believe it's a good bid.

"But what is also encouraging for me is that no matter what happens over the next few days, the future of the club appears to be secured."
