"But it was probably a bit soon. (Returning to the first team last weekend) I had not kicked a football in a long time.
"I played in the reserves and came through that OK, but that was my first real action in more than a month." Nicholson told the Evening Post.
However, with The Magpies formation change working well so far Nicholson may find himself warming the bench for a few more games yet.
"Now I am obviously facing a fight to get back in the side.
"The way the lads played at the weekend, I could not see Billy wanting to make any changes for the trip to Tranmere.
"I would like to think I might be able to get back into the squad, even if it is only a place on the bench.
"Then it will be up to me to work hard to get my chance again.
"Obviously every player wants to be involved but it was just great to see us pick up three points against QPR." The former Sheffield Wednesday & Northampton player added.
