Mills receives double transfer boost

Mills has been chasing Clarke, in particular, hard in recent weeks and is desperately keen to add the 24-year-old defender- who was Darlington's player of the year last season- to the ever increasing ranks at Meadow Lane.

And, despite the fact that the former Wolves trainee has a year left to run on his current deal at Darlington, Quakers boss Dave Hodgson has stated that he would not stand in the defender's way, should he see the light.

Matt Clarke- On his way?
"I'm not the kind of person to stand in somebody's way if they have the chance to further themselves," Hodgson told the Evening Post.

"Unfortunately for us, Notts County are in a position where they can offer Matt better terms.

"He is still under contract with us but I don't think it would be fair if we told Matt he had to stay here on less money.

"That is not my way of thinking."

Mills remained tight-lipped as to how talks with the 6'3 centre back were going, but stressed that media reports that Notts were offering him a small fortune were untrue.

"Reports that we are about to double his wages are wide of the mark, but he is a player we are interested in," Mills told the Evening Post.

"We have had an eye on him for some time."

Meanwhile, reports have also suggested that Notts have offered a deal to Lincoln City top scorer Simon Yeo.

Yeo scored 13 goals for the Imps last season and the 30-year-old hitman is believed to have attracted interest from a number of lower league clubs, though Notts were the only name mentioned.

"I have heard Notts are interested and I know other clubs are too," said Lincoln boss Keith Alexander- who plucked Yeo from non league obscurity just two seasons ago.
