Mills backs his young gun

Wilson, one of the precious few youngsters who have genuinely proved their worth to Gary Mills in his four months in charge, was handed his first start for the Magpies yesterday in the right-back position formerly occupied by inspired signing, David Pipe- who moved further forward to midfield.

Although, despite turning in a composed performance on the right side of the defence, the Magpies' new-found number eight agonisingly sliced the ball past stand-in keeper, Saul Deeney in the 74th minute- condemning County to their fifth consecutive defeat on their travels.

However, despite this unfortunate mishap, Mills has insisted that the 18-year old Wilson, a member of the side that successfully defended their Midlands Youth Cup this season, will have a starting role to play in the season's final game at home to Oldham.

"There is a positive out of it for Kelvin and that is he will learn from today, he has gone with it with the wrong foot. He knows it and will learn." said Mills to the Evening Post yesterday.

"He will also learn what it's like playing at this level, about positional play, and how to keep his shirt in the first team.

"He will be playing next Saturday, there's no mistake about that.

"The result is not satisfying for me as we have lost another game. But I thought we defended a lot better today and kept our shape."
