Magpies miss out on duo

The Magpies, who were widely thought to be pursuing the services of Darlington target-man, Barry Conlon and Forest warhorse, Des Walker, were dealt a blow in their preparations for the forthcoming season today after the two transfer-targets earned themselves contracts elsewhere from the ‘Lane.

The 38-year old Des Walker, who was reported to be eyeing the short move across the Trent to Meadow Lane when his playing contract at the City Ground expired in June, was offered a new twelve-month contract in a coaching role under Joe Kinnear at Forest. And so, Walker decided to hang up his boots to pursue a career in coaching and football management - a full twenty years after making his City Ground bow.

Whilst the club's more realistic transfer target, Darlington's Barry Conlon has agreed terms at Paul Hart's Barnsley where he'll pass ex-Magpie Craig Ireland on his way through the door, Ireland having been released by the Tykes just one-year after arriving.

Conlon, who Notts were said to have been leading the race for his signature, passed a medical at the Oakwell yesterday and put pen-to-paper on a two year deal where few will fault the Irishman for choosing Second over Third Division football.
