Ireland, 27, was signed by Jocky Scott on a permanent basis in July 2001 for £50,000 after a loan spell at Meadow Lane from Dundee during the 2000/2001 season.

He made 80 appearances for Notts before being released during the summer, despite being a regular in the side during the past two seasons. Craig found the net for Notts on two occasions, against Cambridge in August 2001 and Blackpool in April 2003.

His contract was not renewed in the summer and he joined up with Barnsley this week, with new boss Gudjon Thordarson casting his watchful eye over the defender with a view to signing him once their financial problems are resolved, and will feature in a pre-season match against Bradford City this weekend at Oakwell.

"I am to involve all trialists at some stage against Bradford this weekend." Said Thordarson.
