Heff off to Bristol

The 22-year-old Irish forward, who had already confirmed he would be leaving the club this summer, was sold to Ashton Gate rather than risking a tricky tribunal to try and get anything like what the player is really worth.

Heffernan scored 21 goals last season, 20 of which came in the league, no mean feat from a side that finished in 23rd place in the table.

The hitman was originally rumoured to be attracting interest from Premiership clubs Blackburn Rovers, Tottenham Hotspur and Bolton Wanderers, while numerous other clubs, including Preston NE and even local rivals Nottm Forest had expressed an interest in the Irishman.

In the end though, 'Heff' surprisingly opted for, or had to make do with, Bristol City- a side now managed by City player Brian Tinnion.

Speaking on the move, Heffernan said: "The manager has told me he wants 25 goals from me and it's a big ask," he told City's official website.

"I was pleased with scoring 21 in a relegated side (last season) but now I am joining a team with eyes on promotion, which is very exciting."

"I know the pressure will be on to succeed in the coming season, but it will be much better than the pressure at the wrong end of the table."

The Dubliner signed a three-year contract yesterday and the fee may rise to £150,000 depending on performances. The Magpies also have a 15% sell-on clause for the forward.

We wish him all the best.
