Hackworth released!

Tony Hackworth, a player who never justified the six-figure sum forked out to Leeds United for his services, and Notts County Football Club have agreed to a financial settlement that will see the contract of the 24-year old striker terminated with immediate effect as of today, a full year ahead of the original date of expiry.

The announcement comes four months after the striker was placed on the transfer list by the new manager, Gary Mills. And yet, even in spite of Hackworth managing to start the first three games of Mills' reign, Hackworth failed to fit into the plans of the new gaffer, partially for financial reasons, as a clause of his contract entitled his former club, Leeds United AFC, to a sum of money based on appearances.

Hackworth - signed by Jocky Scott before working under Brazil, Dearden and Mills - made, in all, 17 league starts and a further 23 from the bench, scoring just one goal.
