Fenton's despair.

One major point that emerged from his revelations was, contrary to popular belief amongst the Notts fans, that a contract was never, in fact, placed under the nose of the 24-year old departing defender. It was believed by all who have heard of Fenton's release that the former-Manchester City man had opened contract negotiations but, after a rumoured 60 per cent pay-cut was offered, promptly cut-off the talks.

The utilised defender, who joined the club for an astronomical looking fee of £150,000 during the reign of Storrie and Scardino, enjoyed good form following an honest first season on Notts' books as happy days were rife for Fenton. But Nicky hit his prime during the 2002/03 campaign where the youngster, who none-too-surprisingly attracted the interest of a host of Football League clubs, blossomed at the heart of the Notts defence.

And, defying the ignorant 'he-doesn't-care-about-this-club' line of thoughts adopted by many a County supporter, Fenton also spoke of his distress at leaving, even despite his disappointing form as-of-late.

Fenton had this to say to the Nottingham Evening Post; "If they had offered me a contract I would have stayed."

"I have not turned down a contract - I was not offered one. It was not my decision to leave Notts County.

"I have been here for three years and I did not want to go.

"I said a few months ago that I wanted to stay, regardless of what happened in Division Two, but I was not offered anything.

"I had two good seasons at the club and thought I had done well for Notts for those two years," he added.

"I know I was not up to the same standards this season. I have been disappointed with my form.

"It is a very disappointing way for my career at the club to come to an end."

Unlike many of those being released, Fenton, surely, should have no trouble whatsoever in finding a new club.
