Through a cocktail of increased supporter hostility, a succession of injuries and the basic shortcomings of his newly structured side, Gary Mills is back in the transfer market. A 24-hour personnel surge into Meadow Lane has seen three new members to the squad arrive in an attempt to rectify his side’s misfortunes. Marvin Robinson – a troubled, out-of-favour striker – became the second of a fresh-faced threesome, after Youssef Sofiane’s arrival on loan, through the Meadow Lane gates

Following a troubled tenure with Chesterfield, Robinson – a former team-mate of both Notts’ Stefan Oakes (with Leicester) and Glynn Hurst (Chesterfield) – is now, like many of Mills’ signings, trying to re-establish themselves in league football after slipping down the divisions.

His time at Saltergate, in which he netted six goals in 17 starts for the Spireites, was hampered by injury – a double-hernia – without the necessary operation having been undergone – meant that his fitness, first team opportunities and thus confidence decreased in a excellent cohesion.

A trainee with Derby County, scoring a single goal in three league games for the Rams, Robinson was loaned out to Stoke (September 2000), Exeter (November ’02) and Tranmere (December’02 – January ’03) prior to his eventual – and inevitable – release from the Rams.

A single season with the Spireites, where his authority was never truly stamped on the Derbyshire side, and Robinson was on the road again. He, yesterday, signed a one-month deal with the Magpies ahead of the visit to Northampton Town.
