When Gary Mills announced that he’d probed once again into his former club’s squad set-up for his latest acquisition, many a visitor to the NCM messageboard were all too quick to pounce upon Mills’ journey back onto familiar ground. But with 13 of the 19 senior squad members already having been injured this season, maybe it’s a case of better the devil you know as opposed to a plunge in the abyss.

Like Avun Jephcott and David Pipe who went before him, Craig Pead [pictured] comes fresh out of the Sky Blues’ youth set-up and, despite having sustained an impressive run under the club’s previous management, although is yet to make a single appearance under Peter Reid.

A once semi-established member of the Coventry first-string, Pead – a left-back by trade and a keen passer of the ball by nature – made 45 appearances in all for the Sky Blues after his dwindling fortunes cost him a place in the starting XI for the core of last season.

Entering the business under the bosom of the Sky Blues’ youth system via the FA School of Excellence at Lilleshall – producer of such fine talents of Michael Owen, Alan Smith and Kevin Nicholson – before earning himself international honours with the England under-20 set-up.

The Bromsgrove-born youngster, who’ll celebrate his 23rd birthday as a Notts County player this Wednesday, will remain on loan with the Magpies for an initial one-month loan period, commencing as of Thursday last.
