Chelsea: Another Fan's View

Last updated : 31 October 2003 By Rob Davies

Still being in my teens I have very vague memories of Notts' glory days, if any at all. So I was more excited for this game then I have been for a long, long time.

It was fully worthy of it's 3 week build-up and it was one of my proudest nights in my time as a Notts fan.

Juan Veron dissapointed Mr Hire
Seeing 19 buses outside Meadow Lane was certanly something special, as was the news that Claudio Ranieri had decided to start with an extremely strong side.

One thing, which did surprise me about the Chelsea side was how poor Veron was.

In my opinion he is a very overrated player. His set pieces were mostly overhit, his passing wasn't always accurate and generally his whole game was of a poor quality.

But then you see somebody like Damien Duff play and the first thing I thought was, if only he was English! His ball control was perfect, he looked very dangerous when he ran with the ball and he has a fantastic footballing brain. I'm sure Steve Jenkins didn't enjoy marking him!

From a Notts point of view, the players were quite brilliant and every Notts player on the pitch put in 110% effort.

Stevie Mildenhall has now proved he can cope at the highest level, some of his saves were absoloutly fantastic and at times amazing. He kept the score down and yet again proved just what a quality player he is.

The defence coped brilliantly with the Chelsea strikeforce. They did not panic when the ball was at the back and passed it around calmly.

Stevie Mildenhall- Proved his class
I'd also say each one of the defenders made at least one goal saving tackle.

For the midfield, I'd say the wingers were excellent. They kept the width and put in some testing crosses.

Darren Caskey was our star man. When he had the ball at his feet he was always eager and looking to play a killer pass. His corners and free kicks were excellent and he nearly got on the scoresheet himself.

And last but not least, Platty and Heffers. They chased the ball down and forced the Chelsea defence into mistakes by constantly putting them under pressure. They were also both unlucky not to score themselves.

But the biggest mention of the night has to go to the fans. We were all very loud and shocked the Chelsea supporters by just how much this game meant to us.

Getting behind the lads encouraged them to play well. Lets try and get behind the boys more often!

The ‘big’ match certainly lived up to the expectations and everybody I know thought we could have won the game!

Come on lads!! Try and play like that every week!
