Away Day Info - Chesterfield

Last updated : 18 August 2009 By Jacob Daniel
After a 4-0 victory at Macclesfield on Saturday, Notts are expected to take a large following the short distance to Saltergate tomorrow to face John Sheridan's Chesterfield. Tickets have been selling fast for the crunch game and NCM brings you all the important info if you're planning on making the short drive to North Derbyshire.

The Ground

Chesterfield play at Saltergate, the world's oldest football ground that still houses it's original tenants. This is, however, the final year that the Spireites will be playing at their old home with the club moving to the new B2Net Stadium at the end of the season. The ground's most recognisable stand is it's large, terraced Kop stand behind one goal which, for big games, can be one of the most vociferous stands in the country. The club's Main Stand is split between home and away fans down one side of the ground, with around 700 seats in that stand allocated to Magpies supporters for the match. On the opposite side the Compton Street stand is designated for home supporters only, whilst the large majority of away fans are housed behind the other goal in the decrepit and uncovered Cross Street terrace.

The Cross Street terrace is a small and uncovered terrace, similar to the ones found at many grounds in the football league. The steps are quite shallow and as such the view isn't great from behind the goal, but it is likely that the majority of atmosphere from away fans will be coming from Cross Street. With the game being a local derby and with a large crowd expected, there will be a significant police presence both inside the ground and in Chesterfield.

What is there to do nearby?

Attractions
With the match being played in the evening and with it being necessary to get to Saltergate early to ensure entry, sampling the delights of the Derbyshire countryside and nearby Matlock is probably not going to be on the agenda, but would probably beat spending too much time in Chesterfield itself. You could always go and look at the famous crooked spire, though.

Food and Drink
Chesterfield town centre is a fairly short walk from Saltergate, so anyone fancying a bite to eat before the match can take a stroll into town and choose from the usual range of fast food outlets. There are also other chippies and other outlets nearer to the ground, whilst inside there is the usual range of pies and snacks. There are plenty of pubs to choose from also, but the NCM messageboard has reliably been informed that The Industry, just five minutes from the away end at Saltergate, is going to be the main drinking hole for away fans. Serving a good range of beers and with outdoor areas it seems to be the popular choice for Magpies fans. The nearby Chesterfield Arms and The County are also away fan friendly.

How to get there

By Car
Chesterfield is one of the season's easiest away games to access by car. Take the M1 North before exiting at Junction 29 and taking the A617 towards Chesterfield. Head straight through the centre of Chesterfield, across two roundabouts and past the famous church with it's crooked spire. As the road splits, keep to the left side and you should follow it right round, past two pubs, before seeing Saltergate on your right. There are various car parks in the town centre that are only a short walk from the ground and there is also limited street parking available around the ground itself.

By Coach
To book a place on the Supporters' Club coach, please call 0115 985 1111. Please note, you need to be a Supporters' Club member to travel on their coaches. To join, pop into the Supporters' Club offices at Meadow Lane on a home matchday.

By Train
Chesterfield is fairly easy by train from Nottingham, with it being a direct service on the Nottingham - Liverpool Lime Street line. Times and prices are listed below. To get to the ground from the station, follow Corporation Street from the station, head straight across the big roundabout onto Saltergate and follow it up to the ground. The walk should take around 10-15 minutes.
