NCM users quiz Keri & Steve: Part Three

Last updated : 13 February 2006 By Rob Davies
Cookie - Was it a forward-thinking decision when Gary Mills came in to scrap the youth policy?

ST - It wasn't to scrap it. He (Mills) had a look at it and decided that, rather than having eight, nine and ten year olds, it would do the nine-year-old's good to have a combined nine & ten year olds set-up. To skip every other age-group.

It's a difficult decision because we run teams here from eight-year-old's, right through to 18-year-old's and it costs a lot of money.

So you have to ask yourself - as a business - is that the right way to do it? In the past you'd get 6 or 7 scholars and from those you'd get one or two a year coming through.

Wilson: Will he stay?
Most clubs - I'm not saying Notts - aren't getting one or two coming through a season and the ones you do get through are being nicked. We lost a really good player - Reece Staples - to Forest last year and couldn't do anything about it.

KU - It's such a shame because Notts invested a lot of effort into him.

ST - Leon Best is another example. (Kelvin) Wilson too, will he stay? We've had two good years out of him but if he goes it'll be a crying shame. But, at the minute, he's not putting pen to paper.

Gangsta_Pie - Is Howard Wilkinson at Meadow Lane for the forseeable future?

ST - Howard's a full director. Howard's great to have around because Gudjon wanted to have one person to deal with as opposed to dealing with the entire board, so we brought Howard in to do that job. Howard is the one person Gudjon speaks to in a football sense.

If Gudjon wants to get a player in or out he won't speak to me about it, initially he speaks to Howard. Howard then gets it all sorted and approaches the board. That's the best way so Gudjon speaks to one person.

I've got a lot of time for Howard, he is a very calm person and often the voice of reason. And he's got a contact book that's very thick!

So I hope he does stay and he seems keen.

TMS - Are we close to taking advantage of the double your investment offer from the local businessman?

KU - We've got £17,500 so far. £75,000's the maximum target so we're still well short. I think one of the problems has been that, taking into account some of the earlier nonsense we've discussed, that doesn't create an environment where people want to fully get behind the Trust or the club. It's been quite a difficult time.
