Confident in such unfamiliar surroundings, Thordarson seemed quite comfortable with his first introduction to the local press, accepting interviews from all quarters, including NCM.

The former manager of the Icelandic national team found time to catch-up with the Notts County MAD team at Meadow Lane yesterday, shortly after his appointment was announced at a specially arranged Press Conference.

"It’s a big challenge, obviously, the club has been suffering for a long period of time and we need to stop that downward spiral and turn things around," said Thordarson, speaking exclusively to NCM.

"There were some considerations (for other jobs in England), but when Notts County came up I know I didn’t fancy anything else and decided to go for the challenge."

From December onwards, Thordarson had been working back in his native Iceland for mid-table outfit Keflavik.

But the 49-year-old insisted that there were other factors involved in his resignation, other then taking the manager's job at Meadow Lane.

"When I resigned from Keflavik, there were difficulties there that I couldn’t accept there. I had a clause in my contract that I had the option to leave them. I considered that in the middle of March to see how things went, and when I saw there was no improvement there I decided to leave."

Commenting on both his future managerial ambitions and his background knowledge of Notts County, Gudjon emphasised that he is the man to take the club forward in the long-term.

But the former Barnsley and Stoke City manager admitted that he will have to work with a tight budget to propel the Magpies back up the league's.

"I was fully aware of Notts County," said Thordarson.

"I was here before with Barnsley and Stoke, so I know what the situation is here. I’m also aware of the history of the club.

"Obviously, I want to go as high as possible but there is no telling what the future will bring. I think it is a good opportunity to move up the scale with Notts County, and I think it is going to beneficial for both club and myself.

"We will look for promotion and move forward as quickly as is possible.

"But we have to be honest that the funds available mean we cannot go out into the transfer market, we’ll have to sign players on Bosman rulings and those out of contract, but that’s already started.

"Hopefully, we can bring in some player to strengthen the squad."

Ending with a strong message for the fans, Thordarson signed off the interview saying, "We need for the fans to stay behind us and the club. I’m fully aware of the of the downward spiral and the disappointment that they’ve gone through.

"This is the turning point.

"If we want success then we have to stay and stick together, to move this club forward."
