Notts County shook table-topping Yeovil Town with two early goals and emerged as deserved winners after four successive defeats had put them in danger of relegation from League Two.

The result left Yeovil just one point clear at the top of the table but with three defeats in their last four games automatic promotion is now far from a certainty.

Yeovil keeper Chris Weale was voted best in the division by his peers last term but was at fault for the opening goal after six minutes from man of the match Stefan Oakes.

The County midfielder spotted Weale on the edge of his penalty area and lobbed him from 45 yards. The goalkeeper was always fighting a losing battle in his bid to get back.

In the 33rd minute Oakes tried it again with Weale again walkabout. This time the 23-year-old managed to scramble back and push the ball away for a corner.

By this time Yeovil were two down as, on 25 minutes, Glynn Hurst scored with a header from a right wing cross by the dangerous Ruben Zadkovich.

Yeovil might have thrown themselves a lifeline four minutes before half-time when Latvian international Andrejs Stolcers found himself clean through, but Magpies keeper Saul Deeney saved with his legs.

Notts made it 3-0 after 58 minutes when Mark Stallard lobbed Weale from outside the box. Again there was a question mark over the keeper's positioning, but he was left exposed.

Yeovil, to their credit, worked desperately hard although they were fighting a losing battle.

Their consolation came four minutes from time when recent signing Marcus Richardson was brought down by Kelvin Wilson. Phil Jevons had to take his spot-kick twice but netted both times to record his 26th goal of the season.
