With both sides now free of League Two relegation worries, this scrappy affair had a real end of season feel for much of the 90 minutes as County went ahead on 24 minutes when Shaun Harrad bundled home at the far post, an effort cancelled out by an equaliser from David Edwards on the hour.
In the absence of Peters, Shrewsbury were under the guidance of coach Mick Wadsworth, with the home side giving a home debut to young centre-back Gavin Cowan, who recently joined the club from Canvey Island, but there was no place for striker Luke Rodgers, who this week announced his intention of departing Gay Meadow when his current contract runs out at the end of the season.
Rodgers was clearly missed in the opening stages as Shrewsbury's forward play lacked thrust and penetration and although Notts County carried no great threat themselves they managed to take a 24th minute lead.
Matthew Gill's corner flicked off the head of Shrewsbury midfield man Mike Sheron and at the far post Harrad was on hand to force the ball over the line from close range.
Four minutes later the visitors had a great opportunity to extend their lead when Steve Scoffam picked his way through the Shrews' rearguard only to see his shot rebound to safety off the foot of a post.
As the half came to a close, however, the woodwork prevented Shrewsbury from drawing level, when Sheron lobbed County 'keeper Saul Deeney from 45 yards after Deeney had rushed from his line to clear – the ball hitting an upright with no Shrewsbury player able to convert the rebound in front of an empty net.
The home side drew level in the 60th minute when a neat exchange of passes between Kevin Street and Neil Ashton allowed man of the match David Edwards to advance and score his fifth goal of the season – but from there onward the match petered out into a tame draw.
