Last updated : 02 March 2002 By Paul Berry
Michael Brough began the game in midfield replacing the injured Paul Bolland. Bolland, Ian Richardson, Paul Riley and Mark Warren all look set to be out for the remainder of the season.

The game started badly for Notts as Craig Ireland picked up a back injury after an aerial challenge with a Tranmere striker. But Ireland managed to recover after a substantial delay while he was treated.

A long-distance Baraclough shot proved to be the only threat to either goal in the first ten minutes.

GOAL 14 mins - great work by Paul Heffernan, who beat off the Tranmere defenders and picked out Danny Allsopp with a low hard cross which Allsopp flicked over the Tranmere goalkeeper at the near post.

RED CARD 15 mins - Hill for Tranmere - for arguing about Heffernan's challenge.

Tranmere responded immediately with a shot that beat Garden but drifted wide of the Notts goal.

YELLOW CARD 17 mins - Haworth for Tranmere.

Heffernan was then pulled down in the box but the referee failed to give a penalty. Baraclough was warned for arguing with a Tranmere player.

YELLOW CARD 18 mins - Price for a terrible revenge foul on Baraclough late and high.

A great end to end mover involving Cas and Caskey saw Liburd's angled shot saved by Achterberg.

The game became end to end as both teams started to put good moves together in midfield. Liburd and Caskey looked particularly lively.

Danny Allsopp had another penalty appeal turned down on 23 minutes but it looked like a blatant dive.

YELLOW CARD 24 mins - Barlow of Tranmere for bringing down Richard Liburd.

Tranmere looked dangerous as the lively Barlow got on the end of Price's cross but Stuart Garden rescued the Magpies with a great save.

Allsopp played a great ball to Liburd who got to the byline and chose to shoot from an angle. The rebound fell to Cas who whacked the ball over the bar.

GOAL 32 mins - After a Liburd inspired move a Baraclough cross found Allsopp unmarked in the box and his header looped over the Tranmere keeper in to the net.

Heffernan was played after more midfield mastery but a defender manged to get a foot in to prevent the young Irishman's cross to with Cas in space.

YELLOW CARD 34 mins - Kumas of Tranmere for scything down Richard Liburd.

GOAL 39 mins - Allsopp picked the ball up on the edge of the area and brilliantly chipped Achterberg. OK it was an attempted cross that drifted in BUT WHO CARES whooopppeee!

6 minutes of injury time were signalled by the 4th official as the Notts fans were celebrating an unbelievable first-half performance.

Heffernan turned his man well in a dangerous position but he could not stay on his feet and Roberts was able to clear.

Allsopp managed to put in a shot from a tight angle but could not deliver as Cas and Heffernan stood in space in the area.

Tranmere went down to nine men just before half-time as a defender went off injured.

Half-Time Notts County 3 - 0 Tranmere Rovers

Tranmere are in 9th place in the second division with every hope of making the play-offs. This makes the half-time score all the more unbelievable. However, with Notts record this season many Notts fans will be wondering "can we hang on?".

The Notts players were given a rousing reception by most of the 4,562 fans as they came out for the second half.

Substitution: Thornton for Henry and Sharps for Roberts.

Heffernan and Cas immediately had shots after Heffernan was played in by Caskey but Achterberg was up for the challenge.

Craig Ireland put a free header from a Caskey corner well wide of the target.

Notts continued to look the sharper of the two teams. Michael Brough was having one of his better games winning every tackle and distributing the ball wisely.

Liburd put a good long range shot over the bar.

Garden was forced to save well from Barlow as the Rovers striker got in to the box and shot from an angle.

The substitute Thornton was looking useful as Tranmere began to take more control.

But Notts made their extra men count as Caskey met Allsopp's cross with a header that was well saved. Heffernan and Richardson both followed up with shots but Richardson's challenge on the keeper was considered illegal.

Yellow Card 58 mins - Leam Richardson for a late challenge on Achterberg

Heffernan and Allsopp tried to play a one-two which would have set up the young Irishman but Alsopp's pass was not good enough.

Cas managed to get a toe to the ball as a Tranmere defender tried to shepherd it back to the goalkeeper but the ball went wide.

Yellow Card 62 mins - Craig Ireland for persistent fouling.

Yellow Card 67 mins - Thornton for dissent..

Notts seemed to be losing concentration as the game drifted with Liburd providing the relief. Liburd has to be our most valuable player.

Substitution: Jorgensen for Leam Richardson

Richardson may start the next game at left-back as Ian Baraclough is due to start a three game suspension after today's game.

The Notts midfield put together a sustained spell of passing pinning back Tranmere in to their own half. Unfortunately, Heffernan's pass went behind Marcel Cas.

Navarro managed to get a good cross in for Rovers as Jorgensen argued with a linesman but the County defence managed to clear.

Substitution 80 minutes: Hackworth for the superb Heffernan

Jorgensen was easily beaten by Thornton and Fenton was forced to clear for a corner. But the confident Garden easily collected the corner.

Garden saved well again but the whistle blew for offside against Haworth.

In an amazing incident Tony Hackworth hit a daisy cutter from 25 yards. The ball hit a divot as the keeper went to collect and the ball flew well over the bar.

Kumac hit a good shot from 20 yards but Garden got down well and pushed the ball around the post for a corner.

Substitution 89 minutes: McNamara for Cas

A late, desperate long range effort from Navarro drifted way over the bar and in to the arms of the Tranmere faithful.

Final Score: Notts County 3 - 0 Tranmere Rovers
