Notts County 2 Luton Town 1

Almost all the excitement - and all three goals - were crammed into the last 11 minutes and what went before can be largely and easily forgotten.

Neither county nor Luton had the skill to create clear cut scoring opportunities and both goalkeepers were seriously under employed in a poor first 45 minutes.

This was remarkable considering the urgency of points for both clubs - Luton to climb into the top six and Notts to avoid dropping into the bottom four.

That message seemed to have got through at the start of the second half, which was certainly brighter for the home fans.

When the County goals came they lit up the game by their sheer quality.

Both were scored by young Irish striker Paul Heffernan, with quite majestic finishes.

The first pass was astutely supplied to him by Ian Baraclough and then the other central midfielder Richard Liburd followed suit with a piece of intelligent play.

On both occasions Heffernan was left with a lot to do and did it superbly to lift him to eight league goals for the season and give him his first double - all his others had come in singles.

Luton looked to be well beaten when they were offered a late chance to save a point. Magpies defender Kevin Nicholson failed to clear properly and Tony Thorpe capitalised with a low drive into the far corner of the net.

Luton set up a storming finish but Notts held out though not as comfortably as they should have done.

The most disappointed person on the ground was 17-year-old Willis Francis who had been handed his full League debut by County manager Billy Dearden.

Sadly for Francis he lasted only 15 minutes before having to be taken off with a hip injury which will keep him out of contention in the immediate future.
