Notts County claimed their first victory at home in 12 attempts and ended a seven-match run without a win over Wycombe Wanderers in the process.

The relief was palpable as County now remain unbeaten after three matches.

Wycombe arrived on a high following their midweek win at Bristol Rovers, whereas Notts were edgy as they looked for their first victory and it showed in the opening stages.

The goal by the hole side after 17 minutes was not only a decisive moment, but one from which the confidence of the Notts players visibly grew and for a while they took complete charge of the contest.

The goal was a beauty. Great credit belonged to David Pipe for the persistence which allowed him to gain possession before slipping a delightful pass into the path of Junior Mendes who finished clinically to open his account on his second start for the club.

Wycombe were also prepared to mix it but too much for the liking of referee Darren Deadman who, having cautioned 19-year-old Anthony Grant on 34 minutes, then flourished another yellow card in his direction six minutes later to dispatch the Chelsea loanee to the dressing room.

Notts missed good opportunities in the second half to increase their lead and put the game beyond Wycombe.

Andy Parkinson blazed over when well placed and Mendes was then a trifle unlucky to see his effort come off the legs of Wycombe goalkeeper Ricardo Jorge Cecília Batista and be diverted for a corner.

Wycombe sensed they could still get something out of the match and started a bombardment of the Notts goal, particularly after Jermaine Easter and Sergio Raul Torres had been brought off the bench.

The Notts back four continued to hold firm, however, with debutant Dan Gleeson outstanding.
