Northampton hot-shot Scott McGleish fired blanks as the play-off contenders were held by struggling Notts County.

The 16-goal striker was guilty of a series of glaring misses in a lack-lustre encounter at Meadow Lane.

Both teams lacked a killer touch, mustering just three efforts on target between them. And it was McGleish who squandered the better chances.

His worst miss came on 77 minutes when substitute Stuart Noble sprinted down the left and put a goal 'on a plate' for the front man.

But from ten yards out, and with just the keeper to beat, McGleish kicked nothing but fresh air.

He also missed with two headers in quick succession just before the break - the first from Luke Chambers' cross that flew over the bar.

And when he cleverly worked space from David Rowson's corner at the back post, he nodded another decent chance wide.

County had started brightly and David Pipe went close with an angled drive early on.

With Mark Stallard pulling the strings up front, they looked a real threat in the early stages.

And it was Stallard who powered a header over from a fine first-time cross hit by Paul Bolland.

The on-loan striker also hit the Magpies' single effort on target with seven minutes to go but Lee Harper was positioned well to clutch the left-foot shot.

The visitors pushed hard for a late winner and Martin Smith went close with a fierce volley in the 89th minute.

And when McGleish got a final chance for glory in stoppage time, his tame effort dribbled to Saul Deeney in the County goal.
