Notts County's problems off the field are well known. Sixteen months in administration and with two failed takeover bids in the last three years and a new buy out now pending.

The new owners, whoever they turn out to be, are inheriting a club deep in trouble as underlined by a second successive league defeat.

Neither in the 5-0 crash at Bristol City nor in Wrexham's one-goal win have Notts yet managed a goal though manager Bill Dearden afterwards expressed confidence in strike pair Mark Stallard and Paul Heffernan, who registered 40 between them last term.

But Dearden also admitted that Notts had missed the height and strength of injured new boy Clive Platt. His absence made the Notts front-line look lightweight and Wrexham's defenders always had the better of it in the air.

The visitors' star man was Dennis Lawrence who hails from Trinidad, a country more used to exporting outstanding cricketers. On this evidence Lawrence has a big future in the game.

Notts were easily the better side in the first half, but could not make their superiority count and Wrexham boss Denis Smith gave his players a roasting at the interval.

"I told them that if we continued to play like that we would not only lose this game but be relegated," he said.

It worked a treat as the Welshmen recovered to control the second 45 minutes and score a fine goal.

Carlos Edwards made it as his clever play took him clear of Notts defender Kevin Nicholson before he laid the ball into the path of substitute Hector Sam who had the easy task of scoring from close range.

Notts made a couple of late changes to try to retrieve the matc,h but the only effort which troubled veteran goalkeeper Andy Dibble was a long-range effort from midfielder Ian Baraclough which he turned over the bar.
