Notts County 0 Wigan 2

Wigan Athletic produced a storming second-half display to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season to the joy of their hundreds of travelling fans.

Notts County, by contrast, sustained their first defeat of the campaign and now regard Wigan as their bogey team.

Back in February, Wigan won 3-1 at Meadow Lane but the Magpies then went unbeaten through their next seven home matches before the Latics again spoiled the party.

It all seemed so different in the first half when County played their best football of the season - except when it came to finishing.

They were made to pay a heavy price for their failure to convert even one opportunity and the most glaring miss off all was committed by Marcel Cas who blasted wide when it seemed simpler to score.

There was also a huge question mark at the start of the second half when central defender Craig Ireland, up with his forwards, was vigorously pushed to the ground in the penalty area but referee Mike Riley saw nothing wrong with it.

Managers Billy Dearden and Paul Jewell both expressed surprise afterwards that a penalty had not been awarded.

Notts were sunk by two goals by ace finisher Andy Liddell who is now already on four for the season.

The second was created for him by fellow striker Nathan Ellington - who had had ran around the defence - and Liddle finished with a delightful shot. The first goal though for him was a touch of magic, he tore, unchallenged, through the heart of the Notts defence and finished with an unstoppable shot.

Notts shuffled their pack with three substitutions but the longer it went on the more Wigan were in control as County lost for the first time this season
