Macclesfield Town extended their Football League lives with a tension-filled draw against Notts County. Although, with Wrexham scoring three second-half goals at home to Boston, the point in the end did not matter.

Showman player manager Paul Ince brought himself on for possibly the last five minutes of his illustrious playing career to the cheers of another bumper crowd, and he reminded the fans of his footballing artistry with a succession of neat touches but Macclesfield are more grateful for his managerial skills.

He arrived with the Silkmen dead and buried, boasting only five points from 15 games, but over the last five months he has managed a revolution at the tiny Cheshire Club.

Macclesfield should have made their futures safe in the first-half hour but squandered a succession of chances.

They did score on six minutes when John Miles jinked past his marker before slotting home from eight yards, but they should have been in front before then with Danny Swailes heading wide from close range.

Striker Matty McNeil then headed wide from close range before Jamie Tolley saw a powerful low 15-yard drive finger-tipped wide by the agile County keeper Kevin Pilkington.

Macclesfield were made to pay in the 39th minute when Andy Parkinson latched onto a speculative long ball from Stephen Hunt to score the Nott's equaliser at the second attempt past keeper Tommy Lee.

Lee made a superb acrobatic save in the 50th minute to punch wide a pile driver from Matt Somner.

Macclesfield should have calmed their nerves soon after but Swailes headed over the bar in the 64th minute.

The biggest cheers of the game were reserved for the late entrance of Ince, and news of Wrexham's two late goals at the Racecourse which sealed Boston's relegation.
