Last-minute spot-kick denies Magpies

A dire game saw Notts stretch their winless streak at Meadow Lane to a whopping eight games and plunge them further into relegation trouble with just four games of the season remaining.

Notts' barron spell at home has stretched as far back as the side's win over Shrewsbury back in mid-January. And, but for some dreadful finishing from the Silkmen, the Magpies would certainly have come away from today's game with nothing to show for their efforts.

A shocking first-half saw former Lincoln man Marcus Richardson squander three routine chances, heading over twice from close range when totally unmarked, whilst totally failing to control the ball in front of Shaun Marshall's goal, a man making his league debut for Notts in the absence of virus-stricken Kevin Pilkington.

Despite the game taking on added importance, Gudjon Thordarson's men were terrible, with the ability to string simple passes together seemingly beyond their capabilities. At the other end, Macclesfield weren't having any trouble coping with the combined threat of surprise strike pairing David Pipe and Steve Scoffham.

Somehow, Notts were able to edge out in-front right on the edge of half-time. Free-scoring centre back Mike Edwards took advantage of some hesitancy on the part of Macclesfield ‘keeper, Tommy Lee, to force the ball over the line amongst a crowd of players after a Chris Palmer corner.

The second half was equally as, if not worse than, the first with Notts trying – but, ultimately, failing – in making any sort of in-road into the Macclesfield half. It was, in fact, the visitors who were playing with a distinct of controlled, passing play that left the Magpies in the shade, with County's fragile lead defended only by the resolute defending of one Liam Needham.

With just one-minute remaining, logic and the club's shear desperation for points would have certainly suggested the Magpies played out for their slender victory.

Macclesfield were to get the point their efforts deserved though, when Brian O'Callaghan was judged to have up-ended Macclesfield substitute Kevin Townson for a somewhat harsh penalty shout. The subsequent spot-kick was easily converted by Paul Harsley, setting up a real cliff-hanger to the end of season for the Magpies, ahead of Monday's trip to table-topping Carlise.
