Mid table sides Colchester and Notts County played out an entertaining draw in the Layer Road sunshine.

There was no end of season feel to this game, even though both sides effectively guaranteed their division two safety in recent weeks.

Colchester, whose manager Phil Parkinson accepted the Division Two manager of the month award for March earlier in the week, were ahead after just seven minutes through Karl Duguid.

Their goal came about because of a blunder by defender Patrick McCarthy. His back header was far too weak and Duguid intervened to clip the ball beyond the on rushing keeper Saul Deeney and into an unguarded net.

United had several chances to add to their tally before Mark Stallard came up with the equaliser in first-half stoppage time.

Midfielder Kemal Izzet was twice denied in quick succession midway through the half when Scott McGleish flicked on a corner, Izzet's instinctive shot flew off a foot of a post.

Izzet was quickly onto the rebound only for Magpies keeper Deeney to bring off a smart block.

Goalscorer Duguid also spurned a good opportunity when firing into the side-netting with just Deeney to beat.

A minute later County were celebrating their equaliser. Colchester keeper Richard McKinney saved Paul Heffernans' goalbound shot, only for Stallard to bury the rebound from a couple of feet out.

It was Stallard's 25th goal of the season, and it guaranteed another point for the in-form Magpies.

Colchester have been in red hot form themselves of late, suffering just one defeat in their last 14 fixtures.

They are now eyeing up a top ten finish, which would have been unheard of at the end of January, when they were lying third from bottom.

Colchester manager Parkinson said: " It was a good point for us. It was important to keep our run going and there are a lot of tired legs out there."
