The points finished where they were most needed, ensuring that Notts County - the oldest club in the Football League - retained their status for another season.

Wycombe created a surprise by making six changes and their re-shuffled side, unable to make it seven games in a row without defeat, will now need points in their last game to improve their play-off ranking.

Result aside, Wycombe comprehensively dominated the first half and were close to being ahead in only the second minute.

From a dangerous left-wing corner leading Wycombe striker Scott McGleish crashed a free header against Russell Hoult's left-hand post.

After that Wycombe's free-flowing football repeatedly had Notts on the back foot and in the closing stages of the opening period Hoult saved smartly when dangerman Delroy Facey contributed a lovely curling effort.
Butcher... Probably the most important of his career

It was a different story after the break and Notts confirmed their comeback with the 66th-minute decider.

It began with a brilliant run by Myles Weston who put three defenders out of the game before feeding the ball through to Jason Lee who flicked it on to Richard Butcher who scored from close range with the most delicate of touches.

It was leading scorer Butcher's 12th goal of the campaign and his first in 11 games. What's more it's the first time Butcher has scored and been on the winning side.

There was still time for near misses at both ends. With ten minutes to go lovely work by substitute Sergio Torres set up Facey whose header was smartly saved by Hoult.

Then, in the dying moments, Stephen Hunt waltzed through the Wycombe rearguard and saw his low shot flash wide.

The final whistle was greeted with jubilation by the Notts fans and the sense of disbelief by those who had travelled from Wycombe.
