Sunday's New York Times named Marjorie Scardino on of the favourites to take over the vacant position along with executives from Disney, Blockbuster and Comcast Cable.

Dame Marjorie Scardino
Homeward Bound?
Mrs Scardino is currenly the chief executive of the Pearson Group, based in London, which owns the Financial Times.

She has been responsible for building up the company's on-line presence and the British born Texan was recently made a Dame in the Queen's honours list.

AOL's shares have fallen 75% since their merger with Time Warner in January 2001, resulting in a major management shakeout this week.

Mr Scardino must be feeling disheartened having suffered a number of blows in trying to raise capital to buy-out the previous Chairman.

The opportunity to pack things in and return to his native USA be prove too much of a temptation.
