Ullathorne released

After a season in and out of the side, Ullathorne, 34, has today been released from the club after two years here, with Gudjon Thordarson looking to inject fresh blood into that role.

With Liam Needham and Dan Martin both signing fresh deals, it seems that three was certainly a crowd for the much-contested left-back slot, with Ullathorne today falling victim to the younger generation of full-back.

Signed originally by then-manager Gary Mills following the club's relegation to League Two, Ullathorne – one of the few known highly-paid players amongst the squad – enjoyed a breathtaking first season here, emerging as one of the most consistent performers, making 37 starts in his first season with the Magpies.

His second season, however, saw the form of the veteran, and likewise of those around him, dwindle somewhat, as Ullathorne was in-and-out of the side amidst rumours of a training ground bust-up with manager Gudjon Thordarson.

The Iceman, however, admits there is no bad blood following Ullathorne's departure, insisting that the decision was purely based upon the player's age.

I have spoken to Rob Ullathorne's agent and, at this moment, I won't be offering Rob a new contract," Thordarson told the club's official web-site earlier today.

"It is nothing against his performances. I am looking to bring in younger players for that part. Rob did a good job for me over the season, and I think him for that.”

Ullathorne, who experienced life in the Premiership and La Liga prior to joining Notts, leaves Meadow Lane shortly after the departures of Stacey Long, Noé Sissoko, Shaun Marshall, Matty Williams, Brian O'Callaghan, Chibuzor Chilaka and Andy White.

NCM would like to echo Gudjon's sentiments and thank Ullathorne for his efforts during his time here, and also wish him luck in the future.
