Bury proved quickest out the blocks on the opening day of the new campaign, they stormed to top of the league with a 3-1 home win against Yeovil. But it was Yeovil who took the lead first off through Adrian Caceres which prompted a second-half fightback via David Nugent, twice, and Graeme Jones. Whilst Northampton, touted by many to take the title out-right, re-assured punters with sound 2-0 victory over Swansea City, defeat sending the Swans to the foot of the table. Colin Calderwood's men romping into sixth place thanks to a Scott McGleish effort and Swansea's Sam Ricketts, who put through his own net eight minutes from time.

Meanwhile, Mansfield Town came out less-than brimming following their play-off final defeat last season, they went down 2-0 at home to next Saturday's opponents for Notts, Bristol Rovers. A brace from Rover's Junior Agogo helping to put pain to Mansfield's aspirations of another season battling it out at the top, Derek Asamoah coming closest for the Stags as his shot found the post.

Ian Baraclough was, however, to enjoy finer form than his former Notts team-mates, he set-up substitute, Matt Sparrow for Scunny's third in a 3-1 victory over ex-Notts Steve Parkyn's Rochdale.

Elsewhere, Macclesfield [3-1 Kidderminster] and Cheltenham [2-0 Southend] got their campaigns off to a flyer with respective victories.
