Transfer deadline day round-up

Last updated : 31 August 2005 By Richard Brown

With the summer transfer window almost having slammed shut, it seems very much as though manager Gudjon Thordarson has ceased trading for now – until January, that is.

The window – the first of its kind to come into play outside of the Premiership in the English game – has not closed without incident, however, with Gudjon still managing to shuffle his deck ahead of the season ahead.

Loyalty: A rare, and all too expensive commodity
The former Icelandic international boss has declined to offer veteran defender Ian Richardson a new deal with the club.

A run of injuries and waning fortunes have amounted towards his departure, and the player, 34, is now expected to take action with the PFA upon the matter.

Richardson - who joined the Magpies back in 1996 - played his final game for the club in a behind closed doors thrashing against Derby County yesterday, as a second-string outfit received an 8-1 spanking from their hosts.

The player - who managed the Magpies for much of the last campaign - has now been released, and his solicitor advised as – with the closing of the current transfer window – his chances of finding a new club have now disappeared, meaning he is out of work, at least until the next window.

Elsewhere, coming into the ‘Lane, by no surprise whatsoever, on a more permanent deal is ‘keeper Shaun Marshall.

Despite failing to free fellow ‘keeper Saul Deeney from his Meadow Lane limbo, Gudjon has brought in the former Cambridge United man until the end of the season after formerly having signed non-contract forms with the club.

It was first thought that it would be unfeasible to complete a move for Marshall without relieving the wages of Deeney from the budget. However, with the club parting company with Richardson, it seems as though his departure has freed valuable funds for the addition of the 26-year old goalkeeper, who will act as back-up for Kevin Pilkington.

Elsewhere, and rumours of Gudjon teaming up with son Thordar ‘Toddi’ Gudjonsson have been quashed with the deadline now having passed.

With no news suggesting Notts have made an approach – be it on loan or on a more permanent deal – for the Icelandic cap, the rumour will peter out until January, at least.

And, finally, though Tony Scully completed an extremely late switch on-loan to Exeter City, fellow transfer-listed forward Matty Williams has been unable to find himself a club elsewhere.

The pair were made available in early August by the Iceman, who saw no place for the duo in his plans for the season.
