Thordarson frustrated at lack of cutting edge

With five games of the season remaining, Thordarson's side sit five points clear of the League Two relegation zone - with Saturday's match at home to fellow strugglers Maccesfield Town taking on huge importance.

It is all a far cry from September, when a revitalised Magpies topped the table.

Notts have struggled with a lack of goals, but the County boss believes that it is the lack of a recognised frontman that has cost them - and not the team's style of play.

“It's the same story week after week," he told Icelandic publication Fréttablaðið.

"We don't finish teams off, no matter how good goalscoring opportunities we create. I've searched high and low for a goalscorer but nothing has materialized.

"There was a striker who cost £40,000 but in the end we just couldnt afford him. This season has been sort of a rollercoster ride, after a good start we've started to slide down the table and it hurts.”

The club are set to re-structure its finances in the summer when all playing staff - with the exception of Kevin Pilkington - will be out of contract.

But the Icelander admitted that the financial situation has hindered him in his attempts to get the Magpies higher up the table.

“Im disapointed with our league position," he said.

"I told everybody who are concerned that I needed four quality players to keep us hovering around the top places. I have signed one player worth mentioning.

"That's just not enough. The clubs finances are poor and the club has been doing everything they can to sort that out, but that does hinder signing players."

But Thordarson is looking forward to the summer, when he will be able to build his own squad.

“There will be a lot of changes in the squad in the summer. No-one is contracted which is a plus and a minus.

"I've offered my five best players a new contract and hopefully they'll agree to stay. A lot of players will be leaving and hopefully I'll be able to sign quality players, especially strikers who score goals.

“I knew this would be a constant struggle. Im not throwing in the towel, the hard work starts now and everything is possible if the will is there."
