Thor prepares for next season

Thordarson has a clean slate as he looks to build a squad capable of promotion from League Two, with only goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington currently under contract next season.

But, since being handed his playing budget three weeks ago, the County boss has begun talks, both with players currently at the club and with a view to bringing fresh blood to the 'Lane.

"I am seeing a few agents already, so there is progress being made," Thordarson told the club's website.

"I am also going to start approaching a few other players as well, so I will continue to do that. But a lot of work at the moment is testing the water.

"We don't want to go wasting our time on players we cannot afford."

Thordarson's approach of discussing new contracts now has won support from Pilkington, whose manager at Mansfield Town - Keith Curle - refused to discuss new deals until after the season had finished.

"At Mansfield there were times when only two or three of us were under contract so it is not an unusual situation for me to be in," he told the Nottingham Evening Post.

"But the gaffer has his budget and is starting to talk to players now.

"It is a hard business when it gets to summer because 600 other people are looking for a job and it becomes a rat race.

"So it is good for both parties when you know earlier who may be staying and who will not."

Thordarson has already spoken of his desire to keep key players - notably David Pipe, Julien Baudet and Mike Edwards - from the clutches of other clubs.
