Notts had been faced with the reality of having just four fit defenders, with Stephen Hunt and Jason Beardsley injured, accompanied by the potential loss of Michael Johnson.
Should Johnson's toe injury sideline him for tomorrow's home clash with Macclesfield Town, Thompson will expect to be thrown into the starting line-up.
The 27-year-old joined the Latics in 2007, having been released by Forest, but during his time with the Blues he has struggled to force his way into the team.
He has three international caps for the Republic of Ireland, which were picked up during his time with the Reds.
