Despite failing to register a win in any of their five friendlies played over the summer, the Magpies have drew acclaim from fans for the level of their performances in those fixtures open to the public.

Last night's 2-2 draw at home to Doncaster was arguably the best display yet from Thompson's side and that followed a defeat against Coventry (2-0) and draws with Hucknall Town (1-1), Arnold (0-0) and Blackburn Reserves (2-2).

And Thompson has admitted that he is pleased by our how his squad - that contains no fewer than fourteen new players - is knitting together.

"We have shown we have two players for each position and it is pleasing how well the players have gelled," he told the Official Website earlier today.

"We've also shown we want to be attacking and play at a high tempo. We are playing with two lively wingers (David Pipe and Andy Parkinson) and a good playmaker in Ian Ross.

"We have played two very good teams over the last few days and I have been very pleased with how the players have acquitted themselves."

A youthful Notts side take-on neighbours Nottingham Forest in the Bass Vase Trophy tonight, while the Senior squad play their last pre-season fixture on Tuesday, at home to Sheffield Utd - with the season starting a week on Saturday at Lincoln City.

Thompson is likely to play the Xl that will start the campaign the game against the Blades and Ian Ross - who is on a six-month loan from the Premiership new boys - is now certain to play having impressed in both of the recent friendlies.

The youngster now looks set to take his place in midfield alongside Tom Curtis, with David Pipe and Andy Parkinson certainties on the wings. Gary Silk and Austin McCann should fill the full-back slots, with Mike Edwards and captain Alan White at the heart of the back four.

The only uncertainty is in attack, where Junior Mendes and T'Cham N'Toya are pushing expected pairing Lawrie Dudfield and Jason Lee hard for a starting position. Kevin Pilkington will start the season as the first choice keeper, despite strong competition from Saul Deeney.
