Thommo swoops for Curtis

Curtis signed a one-year deal with the Magpies this morning, becoming Thompson's 11th signing since taking charge a month ago.

The defensive midfielder has previous experience with Chesterfield, Portsmouth and, most recently, Chester as well as the Stags - whom he captained on many occasions.

The 33-year-old was popular at Field Mill, but was one of numerous players to be moved-on by Carlton Palmer and subsequently signed by former Stags boss Keith Curle at Chester.

The new boy
Curtis was a long-term target for Thompson - who was keen to keep his identity secret for fear of alerting other clubs - and turned-down a move to Burton Albion to join the Magpies.

Fellow target Hutchinson, though, has opted for a move to Oxford Utd. The former Brentford midfielder was keen to stay in the South due to his partner expecting a baby in the near future.

Thompson is now keen to finalise a move for a creative player to play alongside Curtis at the heart of the Magpies midfield for the next season.

Sheffield United youngster Ian Ross remains the No.1 target, but the Magpies are relying on the Blades paying a sizable portion of the 19-year-old's wages in order to complete a six-month loan.

Meanwhile, Thompson looks likely to further bolster his defensive ranks in the form of full-back Dan Gleeson.

The 21-year-old played under Thompson at Cambridge and is set to spend the next month on trial with the Magpies in a bid to earn a permanent deal.

With midfielder David Pipe the only obvious cover for new signing Gary Silk at right back, it looks likely that Gleeson will be handed a chance at Meadow Lane - should he impress in the upcoming friendlies.

"I will probably look to bring him to the club on a permanent basis if he does well," the County boss told the club's Official Website.
