Thommo in for Rossy

Ross is currently a Sheffield United player, but spent time on-loan with the Pilgrims last season, scoring four times in 16 appearences.

The 19-year-old remains highly-rated by Blades boss Neil Warnock, but is set to go out on-loan for another campaign, with Warnock hoping to build an experienced squad ready for the Premiership.

That would interest Thompson (below left), who was a co-commentator for Boston's games on BBC Radio Lincolnshire last season.

"I need a holding midfield player to win the ball, win back play and then the other players can play off that," the Notts boss told today's Nottingham Evening Post.

"I need someone then to open doors and be constructive with it. We will also be looking to use the loan market and will assess that as it progresses.

"But Ian Ross from Sheffield United is one we are looking at."

An attack-minded player, Thompson is hoping that he can secure Ross on a long-term loan before the end of the week.

The trigger-happy manager is also hoping to secure the signatures of at least one other midfielder, a goalkeeper and a striker in the near future to complete his new squad.

Meanwhile, Thompson today stressed the importance of wingers David Pipe and Andy Parkinson to his new-look team.

Though there has been debate among fans as to what is Pipe's best intention, Thompson intends to play him on the right-side of a midfield four, with right-footed Parkinson lining-up on the left.

"Pipey and Parks can be direct and quick down the wings and get at them," said Thompson.

"I know there was a lack of goals here last season and we can change that, especially by using the wings. It is pointless having Lawrie Dudfield and Jason Lee in the box if you are not going to provide them with the crosses. So get the ball to the wingers and let them get it in and play."

Since taking over as Notts manager two and a half weeks ago, Thompson has agreed deals with nine new players.

Parkinson, Alan White, Matthew Somner, Austin McCann, Gary Silk, Steve Hunt, Lawrie Dudfield, Jason Lee and Tcham N'Toya - five of whom featured for Boston last season - have all agreed terms with the Magpies.
