Thommo: Draw was a fair result

On the opening day of the new League Two campaign, new manager Steve Thompson set out his stall with a rampant second-half display, as his men claimed their first of, hopefully, many points this season, even despite producing a dismal first-half.

In a game where no fewer than eleven competitive debuts were handed out to many of Thompson's new recruits, Notts played out a game very much of two halves, with a shaky start, to say the least, putting the wind up the new Notts chief.

Thommo: Well chuffed
"In the first half we were disappointing. Call it, fear, trepidation or whatever you want, but we simply didn't get going,” bemoaned the Notts boss at yesterday's press conference.

"We have practiced literally 500 corners over pre-season and defending in certain areas and for them to score from one was very disappointing and how it got in I don't know.

"We were sloppy from the start and it give them the momentum and in the first twenty minutes we could not get near them and it was all them."

Overall, though, having weathered the storm for much of the first half, Thompson's men emerged after the break all guns blazing, with the Notts manager full of praise for his new squad's second-half display.

"At half time I spoke to the players politely and told them what was happening and what should have been happening and we held a tighter line because we were defending far too deep in the first half,” said the Notts boss, speaking to the club's official site after yesterday's draw.

At least we finished the game on a high. I didn't expect us to come here and play like Brazil, but I did expect better from the first half because we know are better than that and we kept plugging away to get ourselves level, and we did it.

"We battened down the hatches and sorted it out, and we played more like we can."

Having emerged relatively unscathed from a barrage of early Lincoln pressure, the former Imps manager was more than happy to come away with a share of the spoils after a thoroughly entertaining opening day clash.

"Taking the first half into consideration I would have been happy with a draw in the first half, but I felt we created more efforts on goal and on another day maybe one or two would have gone in.

"On the balance a draw was probably a fair result. We made a few chances and I suppose everything evened out to be a fair draw.”

Unfortunately, however, getting off the mark came at a cost, with the excellent Jason Lee being taken off before time with an Achilles complaint, an injury that may well force him out of Tuesday night's first home game of the new campaign against Shrewsbury.
