The secret is out...

Football's worst kept secret (for 24 hours or so, anyway...) has been confirmed, the former manager of England, Mexico, Lazio, Sampdoria, Manchester City and many others has been appointed as Notts County's director of football. Oh, and he's brought Tord Grip with him.

When NCM first saw the story in the Sun at about this time last night we laughed it off and even put up a report mocking it, oh how foolish do we now feel. Having woken up to a storm of media speculation that Sven was due to join we were convinced that it was a possibility, but not until the announcement on the club's official site just a few minutes ago have we truly believed that something of this magnitude could be happening at our club.

The Sun have now turned to mocking Notts, and who can blame them given the frankly ridiculous nature of this story, but when Magpies fans wake up in the morning their club will be plastered over every newspaper, every news bulletin and will be on the lips of every football fan in the country, maybe even the world. Presumably just what Peter Trembling has been hoping to achieve.

Eriksson has been brought in to oversee the "on-the-field" activities at the club, and his responsibilities will include setting up a scouting network, helping to bed in the reformed youth academy and, presumably, generally wandering round looking important. Whether that is worth the £40,000 a week salary reported by BBC East Midlands Today is open to debate, but who are we to argue?

We expect a lot more on this story tomorrow and it's sure to be a busy day at NCM towers, so keep tuned throughout the coming hours and days for the latest on Sven and the topsy turvy world of Notts County. We may even sign some strikers....
