Jeff was considered one of the brightest prospects at City after joining them aged 10 and going on to play for Manchester Boys and the England U-17 side. He has since chosen to represent Northern Ireland at full international level. After making a good impression in the first team as a 17 year old, Jeff seemed to disappear for a couple of years before re-emerging in the 1999/2000 season where he was a regular in midfield.

Joe Royle likes Jeff for his excellent work rate and harrying of opponents. Able to get up and down the pitch helping the defence or breaking into the opposing penalty area. Jeff is a willing team player and has filled in at right back when required.

Playing Notes:

A terrier-like right sided midfielder who went to Wrexham on loan in the 1998/99 season before returning to City to play a crucial part in claiming promotion. He is now a permanent fixture in the City side that is looking to cement themselves in the top flight. The Northern Ireland international made his debut in the 1996-97 season against Barnsley at Maine Road, but was very much a fringe player when he went on loan to Wrexham. However, a change of scenery did the midfielder a power of good and Whitley was outstanding as City powered back to the Premiership in the 1999-2000 season.
