Sven - "This is my biggest challenge.."

Last updated : 22 July 2009 By Jacob Daniel
Sven Goran-Eriksson today held his first press conference as director of football at Notts County at Meadow Lane, and answered a number of questions from the gathered press about his role and future at the club. He was joined on the panel by chairman Peter Trembling and the dazzled looking Ian McParland as Eriksson's appointment as director of football was confirmed at Meadow Lane today.

Fans have been allowed into the ground to meet Eriksson after his photoshoot on the Meadow Lane pitch today, and a good number of supporters have congregated in the Family Stand chanting and singing, NCM understands. Eriksson has been happy to greet fans and sign autographs and is seemingly happy enough at Notts. So far.

The press conference started with an official looking chap shouting at people and telling them to sit down and be quiet, before Peter Trembling wheeled out his standard statement about the "ambition" that he and his consortium have brought to Meadow Lane, and the club's "history and tradition". In fairness, Trembling spoke impressively about the plans that he, Eriksson, McParland and Munto have for the club and faSvenns will be excited to learn of plans for a new training ground and youth academy in the pipeline, something which Sven will be overseeing. Trembling confirmed that Eriksson had signed a five-year deal at the club, presumably an attempt to prove that he really is in this for the long term.

Eriksson himself then greeted the press like a long lost friend, and quipped that the "weather hasn't changed". With the current monsoon in Leicester, it would appear he's spot on there. He launched straight into "this is the great challenge of my football life", which seemed to be the tagline of the day for Eriksson. He insisted that it was a move made for footballing reasons rather than financial ones, and he said that he could earn far more money elsewhere if he so wished. Sven also confirmed that he will be moving to Nottingham, although we think a council flat in the Meadows is probably not on his shopping list. Judging by the seats at the press conference a trip to Ikea probably is on the agenda, though.

When asked "how do you attract players to Meadow Lane", Sven helpfully said that his phone is "hot" with people asking how much Notts can pay for players. Apparently these calls have come from "half of Europe", so expect Latvian Under 21 internationals at Meadow Lane in the near future. Peter Trembling jumped in to insit that Sven is here for the long term once again, before Ian McParland finally got his chance to speak after sitting and looking very confused for a good 20 minutes. He manages a couple of jokes and says all the right things before it's back to Sven to wrap things up. He says the he "hopes" this isn't the end of his managerial career (worrying for Charlie, you'd say), but does concede that his new role is a bit different to what he's used to. He finishes by saying that he is "ready" to deal with the English press once again. Which is good to know.

The full press conference should be available on BBC Sport at some point later for those who missed it, we'd recommend it as compulsive viewing.
