Supporter's team: the write up

Last updated : 12 December 2004 By Richard Brown

With Ian Richardson’s squad somewhat depleted, it probably would have done him little harm to have made the short trip down to the embankment for the Supporters XI’s training session for inspiration. Although quantity was low – with a 14-strong turn out – the quality of the football, although at times looked at a premium, was promising. Cough Cough.

Mr Henry, eat your heart out.
With some impressive performances from many a player – notably Asher Levin, Ben Hastings and a surprise run-out for manager-cum-organiser-cum-‘keeper, Matt Hire –it would seem that the team will be far better equipped for a future match than their previous 2-1 defeat against the irritably serious Shrewsbury supporters.

Although the so-called ‘friendly’ – despite the game ending in many a bump, bruise, moan, groan, ache and pain – exercise ended in a thumping 7-2 mobbing for the black ‘n’ whites (excuse the makeshift team name, people).

Goal of the day came from Missour Hastings, who lifted a exquisite left-footed chip over the head of Hire on his way to a hat-trick, although his goals were equally matched by an unknown figure – whose name escapes everyone I’ve spoken to since – who set off on a bold run through the middle of the park, evading defender after defender before chipping the ball home.
