Six days to go: Where will Notts finish?

Last updated : 03 August 2008 By Dane Vincent

The News of the World has predicted that Notts County will finish third this season.

Key Man: Russell Hoult is Notts' main man according to The News of the World...
Only Bradford City (first) and Shrewsbury Town (second) were tipped to finish above the Magpies.

The extract read: 'Ian McParland can lead County to a stunning turn-around after last season's final-day survival.

'The new faces have clicked in pre-season - led by hitman Jamie Forrester and goalkeeper Russell Hoult'

Although it is nice to be predicted success by a neutral audience, the research involved appears to be questionable.

With recent injury problems and the current lack of strikers, it is surprising to see Notts so high up.

Bet365 have lesser expectations, offering an impressive 28/1 on Ian McParland's side clinching the League Two Championship.

All of Bet365's odds can be found below:

Goals: The NOTW believe that Forrester can fire Notts towards the automatic promotion places...

Shrewsbury 8/1

Bradford 17/2

Darlington 9/1

Wycombe 10/1

Rochdale 10/1

Chesterfield 11/1

Gillingham 11/1

Port Vale 12/1

Bournemouth 14/1

Rotherham 16/1

Brentford 16/1

Aldershot 18/1

Lincoln City 18/1

Barnet 22/1

Exeter 22/1

Grimsby 28/1

Notts County 28/1

Morecombe 33/1

Chester 40/1

Macclesfield 40/1

Bury 40/1

Dagenham & Redbridge 50/1

Accrington Stanley 50/1

Luton 100/1

Surely Notts will improve on last year, with some decent players replacing those that have departed.

With such a small squad, however, there are questions about whether the side will be able to consistently fulfil its potential over the entirety of the season.

Strengthening in depth is definitely required to generate a realistic promotion challenge.
