Sean Canham... Who are ya!?

Signing a player from the non-league scene is always risky, but unearthing a gem is always the most satisfying type of recruit.

Can he do it again?: Canham scored 41 times last season...
Under Neil Warnock's reign, Notts plucked the likes of Craig Short from the basement divisions.

Short made went on to make 128 appearances for the Magpies before signing for Derby in a deal worth £2.5million - a British record for a defender at the time.

Ian McParland has gone down the same lines, snapping up a non-league striker in the form of Sean Canham.

Signing from newly promoted Conference South side Team Bath, the 23-year old front-man comes with a fantastic goal-scoring record.

Last season, he managed to strike on 41 occasions in all competitions, attracting the interest of Alan Pardew at Charlton Athletic.

Although his trial with the Championship side was unsuccessful, Canham was asked to return for a second examination, signifying that he must have impressed to a certain extent.

Team Bath's Head Coach, Andy Tilson could not speak highly enough of Canham. He said: "He did very well for us last year, but we're delighted that he's got the opportunity to move on, because that's what Team Bath's about.

"He did excellent while he was at the club. It wasn't just his 41 goals last season - his goals to games ratio is really good too.

"I think he played a 120-odd games for us and scored 80-odd goals, so he did do very well for the club."

Canham dropped out of the football league in 2005, when he was released by
Exeter City.

Since then, the prolific goal-scorer has come on leaps and bounds. When asked about whether he could now handle the standard of League Two, Tilson declared: "Yes, of course.

"We lost Matt Taylor to
Exeter City last year at centre-half - he got their player of the year award and got promoted into the football league, so if they're hungry and desperate to try and do it then they can.

"I'm sure Sean's exactly the same and I think he can cut it, but he's got to prove that himself now."

The six-foot-two forward has the all the attributes to handle the physical

Big help: Forrester may benefit from Canham's presence...
nature of the division and will hopefully prove an asset for set pieces, as well as an ideal strike-partner for the likes of Jamie Forrester and Spencer Weir-Daley.

Myles Weston and Matthew Hamshaw will also be pleased to hear that their new team-mate tends to like latching onto balls from the wings.

"He's a striker that's going to cause problems in the box," explained Tilson.

"He can put himself around and he's got this great habit of getting on the end of things.

"We've worked hard on a lot of crosses into the box and he does very well at getting on the end of them - his goals prove that.

"He's a great lad and desperate to learn and we wish him all the best - he'll do well for you at Notts County."

Tilson refused to comment on whether Notts had paid Team Bath a transfer fee, but it has since been reported that a 'nominal' amount has been shelled out for the player.
