However, Darren is still one of our best players and Peter Taylor is in early negotiations with Billy Dearden.

Brighton's official website revealed that Taylor had been in touch with his Notts County counterpart Bill Dearden, but stated negotiations were still at an early stage.

Taylor confirmed that he had expressed an interest in Caskey, and that he had spoken to County manager Bill Deardon, but emphasised that while a move remained a possibility, that was as far as it went at the minute.

Brighton were one of a clutch of clubs who were linked with Caskey in the summer, following the 27-year-olds decision to take advantage of the Bosman ruling by leaving Reading.

The deal is very likely to go ahead, with County in so much debt they will need to get rid of Caskey's huge dint in the wage bill at £4,000 per week on him alone.
