Scoffham finally set for comeback

The homegrown striker suffered the fracture after coming on as a substitute during the last game of last season, at home to Oldham.

The 21-year-old has since suffered a series of set-backs in his bid to resume playing - with the worst being in October when, just weeks away from a comeback, a fall in his kitchen meant the crack in his leg re-opened.

And, with his contract set to expire in the summer, it led to fears that Scoff's brief career in the Football League had come to an end.

But player/manager Ian Richardson has today stated that he is hopeful that the burly frontman will soon be back in action for The Magpies.

Scoff: Set for long-awaited return
"He is scheduled to have the scan on Friday," Richardson told the NEP. "But he's doing that well in training that it should hopefully just be a formality.

"The pyhsio says he is flying at the moment in all his running and we are hoping to have him in full training with the rest of the lads next week.

"He is doing his own programme at the moment, both with and without a ball, and is progressing very well. We were all worried about his situation. He came in and was only a young lad and we were concerned he might not play at his level again after his injury setbacks.

"You look at it and to have that injury and then break it again, it would really set you back. But he has been very determined and worked tremendously hard. We are confident he will make a full recovery and judging by his progress he will.

"It looks a lot better picture than a few weeks back. He will still have the scan as a precaution, but we are confident it has healed."

Scoffham was signed last February from local non-league outfit Gedling Town by former manager Gary Mills for a fee of around £10,000.

The local lad quickly established himself as a fans' favourite, not least for his acrobatic goal celebrations. His direct style of play - usually coming off the bench - caused opposition defenders no end of problems.

It looked certain he would play a key part this season but he has so far had to watch his team-mates struggle at the bottom end of League Two.

Despite his contract nearing its expiry date, there have been rumours that Richardson already has enough faith in his striker to have offered him a new one-year deal.

NCM wish Steve all the best with his recovery.
