Schofield v McCall: Tale of the slow starters

Last updated : 07 September 2007 By Gary Moss
With England to continue thier Euro 2008 qualification campaign against Israel at Wembley on Saturday, there has been a re-shuffle of this weekends League Two ties.

The games have been spread out over three days for this the fifth round of games in the the league.
Llewellyn...One of Wrexham's internationals

Wrexham's game with fellow strugglers Rochdale has been called off completely following the international call-ups of Chris Llewellyn, Mike Williams, Steve Evans, Mark Jones, Mike Carvill and Neil Taylor for Wales.

Game of the Day: Lincoln City v Bradford City

Sincil Bank plays host to two of the division's slower starters to the season on Friday night.

It is the first time these two sides have met since the horrific fire at Valley Parade in 1985.

Hopefully, this game will be remembered for the right reasons as the proud Stacey West Stand pay its respects to the events of 22 years.

As for the football, both sides would have expected to have been in amongst the top seven early doors considering their respective promotion pedigree.

The Imps have made the play-offs in each of the last five seasons while former Premiership club Bradford were widely tipped for a swift return to League One.

Inconsistency has been Lincoln's biggest problem so far. Shedding four at home against Shrewsbury on the first day and suffering defeat to minnows Dagenham last week has un-done their back to back wins over Mansfield and Accrington Stanley.

Ninth in the table after a relatively straight forward start to the season has left fans already frustrated.

One positive so far however has been the emergence of young gun Dany

N'Guessan who signed from local rivals Boston United.

The 21-year-old has played on the left wing of late and has already terrorised in the opening four games.

His pace and skill has been a highlight for the Imps whilst other players have failed to impress.

Bradford have yet to really settle life in League Two with just one win from their opening four games over last season's relegation candidates Wrexham.

Defeats against Barnet and Shrewsbury as well as a humilting 5-1 Johnstone Paint Trophy loss in mid-week have many already writing off the Batams for promotion.

The normally loyal City fans are having their patience severely tested as their team languish sixteenth in the table.

Summer signing Barry Conlon has shown glimpses of being a good signing but is yet to score in Bradford colours. His goals could hold the key to a

successful campaign.

I wouldn't bet against the former Mansfield man opening his account at the Bank.

This game really go produce anything.

Both teams are capable of shining but too could disappoint. I expect a large crowd for this clash and the losers may face a hostile set of supporets afterwards.

Battle of the two Cities, Schofield v McCall, it could be a classic!

Prediction: Plenty of action. Imps 3-1 Bantams

Elsewhere...

Unbeaten Hereford and Macclesfield go head-to-head at Edgar Street on Saturday.

The home side have taken an impressive eight points from their opening four legaue games even though many predicted the Bulls to struggle.

In fifth place, both of Hereford's wins have come on their travels taking two draws in their home games.

The Silkmen have drawn all of their games thus far and will be looking to climb the ladder with their first league win since April.

Stockport's stern home form will be put to the test on Saturday as they face a trip from league leaders Shrewsbury.
Still...Eyes second win

The Hatters are unbeaten at home so far this season including a Carling Cup win over League One Tranmere and a 6-4 win over Cardiff in pre-season.

Three points over the in-form Shrews could see them in play-offs come the end of the weekend.

And finally, Dagenham will sense a great chance to record their second straight win as they take on a leaky Barnet team.

The Daggers beat Lincoln last week with a late goal and again at home will be confident of pulling away from the trouble end of the division.

John Still's men are in for a tough campaign but a victory here could ease some early pressure.
