Richo: Let's finish on a high

Last updated : 03 May 2005 By Richard Brown

They say it’s lonely at the top; and in many respects, that is true. But spare a thought please for Cambridge United. Nine points adrift at the foot of League Two and already having slipped into administration, The U’s now face obscurity as they fall – almost without a whimper – out of the Football League.

Richo expects; but can his Magpies deliver?
And with just thirteen points separating Notts and the relegation zone, we should perhaps count ourselves lucky that – after falling to the very bottom of the Football League late in 2004 – it is not ourselves who are free-falling into non-league football.

After Saturday’s loss at home to Bury, however, Notts manager Ian Richardson is hardly in the mood for sentiment ahead of Cambridge’s Football League bow-out, as he encouraged his troops to claim victory in the final game of the 2004/05 season.

And, as Richardson faces his final game as Notts manager, it seems victory is the only option before the much-loved player-manager Richardson hands over the reigns to the Magpies’ sixth manager in five seasons.

"It was very disappointing to perform so poorly on home turf on Saturday, and we have to go out on Saturday at Cambridge and show our supporters something positive to take in to the summer," said Richardson, speaking to Magpies Online earlier today.

"We were aiming to finish off well at the weekend but that went down the pan, so it is now very important we finish off on a high note at Cambridge."

"There are three points to play for, and we certainly won't be taking Cambridge lightly. They might be down, but on Saturday they beat Rushden and claimed their first away win for a year, and they also gave us a good battle at our place, so we know what to expect," he concluded.
