Richo defends Gordon

In keeping with tradition, it is a well-known fact amongst the Notts County supporters that at least one player has to be abused and rounded on by his own supporters. Unfortunately for Gordon, he is currently filling that vacancy.

The abuse has been no worse then on the NCM board, where a very vocal minority persist in criticising the former Cardiff targetman at every oppurtunity.

And on BBC Radio Nottingham's Matchtalk programme aired last night, Gordon was again the target of some stick from disgruntled Notts County supporters.

But Richardson says the criticism is harsh, and the 25-year-old has simply not had the service to feed off.

"To be fair to Gavin, he has not been receiving a lot of service but despite that he has been working hard up front," Richardson told the official site today.

"Against Maccesfield he ran himself into the ground working hard and got no rewards. I think the fans only see the bad things and not the good things such is his superb work rate.

"But everyone has their own opinions of players. I think Gavin works extremely hard although he has a few areas he needs to work on but he is also happy to learn."

Gordon has still managed to net eight goals this season since his summer move from Cardiff City, despite filling the 'whipping boy' role vacated by midfielder Matthew Gill early November.

Gill was abused by his own supporters at Rushden back in October, but has since managed to turn his game around and won over the Meadow Lane faithful. Most of those same fans - judging by looking at various messageboards - now admit their behaviour towards Gill was out of order at Rushden.

Ironic then, that the majority are now doing exactly the same thing to Gordon.

Let's hope he shoves the taunts down his own 'supporters' throats Saturday, by ramming one past the Stags. Go on, Gav!
